It flows freely from your tap, is available in every restaurant in the country and is the base of nearly every beverage on the market today. Yet somehow 75% of the population is still dehydrated!

Perhaps they forget to drink water, or maybe they consume too many diuretics such as caffeine. However, chances are they know that they should be drinking water, but just donít know how vital it is for all of us to consume regularly.

So if youíve got any doubt about the importance of water and how much you should be consuming, here are 5 compelling reasons to drink more water...

1. Water energises muscles

When your muscle cells become dehydrated and lose their electrolyte balance, they shrivel and cause muscle fatigue. Research has shown that as little as 2% dehydration can affect your physical performance.

So when you're in the gym next, grab the water bottle before doing your next set of squats.

2. Water keeps skin looking good

One of the key signs of aging and fatigue is dehydration. Its partly responsible for the ugly black bags that hang under your eyes when you're exhausted, and it has a large impact on the glow and health of your skin.

However donít think that drinking 10l a day will eliminate those wrinkles and fine lines, as once your body hits optimal hydration your kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids; excessive fluid intake can stress the kidneys and cause great damage to the body.

3. Water helps with healthy kidney

Your body uses fluids to transport acidic waste products out of your cells and out of your body. The main toxin that is excreted from the body is nitrogen which is water soluble and able to pass through the kidneys to be disposed of in the urine.

However if you're not getting enough water your urine flow slows, becomes more concentrated, deeper in colour and with an intense odor.

By drinking too little water you increase your chances of kidney stones.

4. Water keeps your fluid balance in check

The human body is an amazing machine. We talk, walk, jump and think while running on 70% water. However if this level drops, and if you start becoming dehydrated your health risks skyrocket. Dehydration can lead to:

Mental fog
Headaches
Constipation
Joint pain & swelling
Inflammation
Sleeplessness
Stiffness
Low immune system.

5. Water keeps calories in control

Did you know that mild dehydration slows your metabolism by 3%? That means that the average adult can gain over 6 pounds a year simply by not drinking enough water.

On the flip, and exciting side, if you are dehydrated like 75% of the population, you can lose over 6 pounds a year simply by increasing your water intake.

Water also helps you eat fewer calories overall because it helps your body function effectively, decreasing unnecessary cravings.

How much water should you drink?

As a general rule of thumb if you take your body weight (in pounds) and divide it by 2, that will give you the number of ounces that you should drink each day.

For example a 160lb man should be drinking 80 ounces of water a day.

For the best results get a water purifier for your home. They filter out the hidden fluoride and other nasties that can negatively impact your overall hydration.
