6 natural ways to whiten teeth

Just like wrinkles, teeth discoloration is a part of aging and many people are trying to fight it.


Though most professional teeth whitening procedures are safe and convenient, there are also several natural ways to whiten your teeth at home.


1. Brush your teeth after eating and drinking.

This is the simplest and safest way to whiten teeth. You will be surprised at the difference if you religiously brush your teeth after eating or drinking every day.


2. Floss regularly.

Often taken for granted, flossing plays a vital role in your overall oral health. Even if you brush your teeth twice a day or more, tiny food particles may still stay stuck between the teeth; and the only way to get them out is by using floss. Flossing helps prevent cavities, thus protecting the tooth enamel.


3. Use coconut oil as a mouthwash.

Instead of using your regular mouthwash, try using coconut oil. Swish it in your mouth for about 15 minutes after brushing your teeth. Swishing activates your mouth’s natural enzymes, which draw toxins out.

The coconut oil also contains lipids that helps remove toxins from the saliva, teeth, gums, and tongue. This process is called oil pulling and though the research on its benefits is still limited, a lot of people claim that it works for them, giving them a healthier and whiter smile.

Benefits include strengthened teeth and gums, prevent diseases like gingivitis and cavities, prevents bad breath, treats bleeding gums and prevents dry lips, mouth and throat.


4. Drink plenty of water.

One of the easiest natural ways to whiten teeth is drinking plenty of water. Water not only flushes out food particles from your teeth, it also keeps you hydrated which promotes healthy gums and teeth. Water also helps rinse any residue from your teeth, preventing stains and decay.


5. Eat the right foods

Certain foods and drinks such as wine, tea and soda will stain your teeth - to offset the effect, consume foods that whiten teeth. Fruits and vegetables that are rich in water like apples, strawberries, cauliflower, celery and carrots work like a scrub for your teeth and are called natural tooth brushes because they scrub the tooth’s nooks and crannies. They also contain malic acid, which increases the production of teeth-cleaning saliva in the mouth.

After eating acidic fruits like oranges and lemons, make sure to rinse your mouth with water before brushing. The acid from these fruits will tend to wash away the protective coating on your teeth and brushing your teeth immediately after eating these fruits may cause more harm than good to your enamel.


6. Avoid or stop smoking.

Smoking cigarettes or tobacco is harmful to your overall oral health as it can cause gum disease, stained teeth, oral cancer, dulled sense of taste and bad breath. In most cases, the damage caused by smoking is irreversible. Quitting or avoiding smoking cigarettes or tobacco is best for a bright and healthy smile.

Overall, a healthy and bright smile will not only help boost your self esteem, it also keeps you away from risks of various infections and diseases. Eat healthy and maintain a daily regimen of cleaning your teeth to ensure your teeth will stay healthy and white for many years to come.
