Ayurveda: Churnas

In the ancient Eastern practice of Ayurveda, people are defined by their unique blend of the three doshas - vata, pitta and kapha. This personal make-up is known as your constitution or prakriti.

Churnas are dosha-specific spice mixes used to flavour food and encourage inner balance and harmony.

Here we share a basic recipe for each dosha, which may then be adjusted to taste and individual doshic composition. Try to add to your meals as often as possible.

Vata
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground fenugreek
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
pinch of salt (sea or Himalayan)

Pitta
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
pinch of salt (sea or Himalayan)

Kapha
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
