Ayurveda: Vata dosha

In the ancient Eastern practice of Ayurveda, people are defined by their unique blend of the three doshas - vata, pitta and kapha. This personal make-up is known as your constitution or prakriti.

It's believed that in order to achieve an optimal state of well-being and happiness, your individual mind-body type must be embraced and balanced.

Today we will look at the first dosha, vata.

Vata is comprised of air and ether, and as a result, is light, dry, cold, mobile and irregular. Vata is responsible for the movement of the breath, blood and messages that circulate our body.

Vata types, when balanced, are creative and inspirational, but when imbalanced, can become anxious and nervous.

Characteristics of vata types include:
slender
low weight and/or struggle to put on weight
dry and/or cold skin
can suffer from insomnia, bloating and constipation
'spacey', forgetful
likes warm environments
enjoy early mornings and evenings.

To balance vata, surround yourself with and increase exposure to that which is warm, moist and earthy. Indulge in warm baths and embrace layering of clothes.

Eat sweet grains like rice, quinoa and cooked oats, and enjoy honey or maple syrup. Oils and ghee are also very beneficial, so eat a small serve with every meal. Herbal teas and warm water are also good for you.

Reduce consumption of foods or drinks that are cold or dry, and anything that is very spicy or bitter. Highly processed foods and carbonated drinks should also be avoided.

Eat regularly and only when calm and relaxed. Routine and stillness are a vata's best friend.

Yoga, walking, tai chi and other light and gentle activities are the best exercise for vata. Try to avoid or minimise anything that strains or pushes your body too far.
