Buttermilk is a milk product, it is the whey left behind when cream is churned to make butter. This liquid is a light, fat-free, low calorie drink that is full of good gut bacteria.

Low calorie summer drink - buttermilk

Nowadays, buttermilk is made by fermenting milk and we can very easily prepare it in the comfort of our home. It can be had by itself with just a dash of salt, or seasoned as per liking.

It is a healthy coolant in summer, as opposed to soft drinks which are laden with sugar and preservatives - its probiotic nature helps improve digestion. Read on for how to make this humble drink. Measurements are approximate. You can adjust as per taste. The following will make 2 tall glasses.

Ingredients
1 cup plain yogurt
salt to taste

The ingredients listed below are for seasoning and optional.

Mint and coriander leaves, fistful of each
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
water or ice cubes to adjust consistency.

Method
In a blender, add half the yogurt along with mint and coriander leaves, fennel seeds and cumin seeds. Blend it together.

Now add remaining yogurt and ice. If not using ice, add 1/2 cup water. Blend together.

Buttermilk has a thin consistency, so add water/ice to adjust the consistency. Add salt as per taste.

The seasonings give a yummy taste to buttermilk and the mint leaves aid in digestion. You can have this preparation daily along with, or after meals.

Garnish with mint sprigs
