Energizing Chia Banana Berry Smoothie

A smoothie is a quick and healthy option for breakfast. Drinking a smoothie for breakfast helps me feel full and energised to start the day. The following is my quick go-to recipe and the one I most prefer. My young children also enjoy this recipe. I use a Nutribullet, which holds 2.5 cups.

A whole fruit smoothie is more filling than homemade juice. Unlike juice, a smoothie retains the dietary fiber in the fruit which is digested slower than juice, making you feel full longer, and avoids blood sugar spikes that may be experienced with juice. A smoothie allows you to have the whole fruit in a tasty nutritious drinkable breakfast. The added chia seeds give you a nice boost of energy.

Ingredients:
A large handful of spinach, approximately 1 cup
1 medium sized banana
2-3 fresh or frozen strawberries
1/4 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
1 tablespoons chia seeds
1 cup plain milk kefir
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
Optional - local raw honey to sweeten

Method:
Place all ingredients in blender or Nutribullet and blend until smooth.

This smoothie is packed with nutrition as well as taste. This recipe provides a good source of protein, dietary fiber, calcium, and potassium. It also provides iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and folate, as well as Vitamins C, B6, A, K, and E. The health benefits of kefir can be found here. Chia seeds are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. The optional added local raw honey will not only sweeten the smoothie up, but it also adds itís antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. Local and raw is considered the best and most nutritious type of honey.

Tip #1: Keeping the berries and spinach frozen will allow them to keep longer.
Tip #2: Milled flax seed can be used in place of chia seeds. Flax seeds have many of the same benefits as chia seeds. The flax seeds must be milled in order for the body to access the nutrients, whereas chia seeds can be used whole.
Tip #3: This is also a great late night snack to satisfy sweets craving. Be sure to LEAVE OUT the chia seeds if you eat this late at night, as those give you energy and you don't need that when trying to get to sleep!
Tip #4: Chia seeds can be found at natural food stores, in the natural food section of your local grocers, or for purchase online.
