After the excesses of Christmas and New Year it can be a struggle to get back into the exercise routine. Exercise DVDs can be a tempting way to give you the push you need to get back on track.

There are always plenty of these handy plastic discs to be found in the early part of the year, whether they be unwanted Christmas presents passed on to you by friends and family, or lying in the bargain bins of the January sales. But are they all they’re cracked up to be?

The answer is yes, they can be, but this comes with a caveat. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of an exercise DVD and to help get you back into a healthy lifestyle as quick as a flash.

Do Your Research

With every celebrity from the A-list right down to the more obscure letters of the alphabet releasing exercise DVDs, selecting a good one can be bewildering. It’s worth bearing in mind that there is no correlation whatsoever between the fame of the celebrity and the quality of the exercise routine promoted by their DVD.

When choosing a DVD, try to ignore the name on the front of the box. Instead, head online and look for customer reviews and expert testimonies, as it is these that signify true quality. Sites like Amazon and Play.com also rank their reviewers according to expertise and the usefulness of their content, which can make it even easier to know who to trust.

Know What You Need

Blundering into a shop with nothing more than the vague idea that you want to get fit is not enough. In order to get the most out of an exercise DVD, you need to know precisely what you need. Maybe you want to tone up your stomach following a few too many mince-pies and pints of Christmas ale; maybe you want to boost your upper body strength ahead of a return to your chosen sport in January. Identifying your goals makes it easier to find a routine that will fit you.

Speaking with people who know you and know your levels of fitness is also useful. Whether it’s a gym buddy, a trainer or a sports teammate, gaining advice from someone who knows about your personal fitness regimes and goals will help you make the right choice.

Get Your House in Order

The main problem with exercise DVDs is that it is tempting to view the action of purchasing such a DVD as part of the exercise routine itself. Buying a DVD and sticking it on your shelf, or downloading a digital copy to your computer, reassures us that we are taking control of the matter and that we are taking positive steps to improve our situation.

Instead, we should start as we mean to go on and set down a rigourous plan for just how we are to use the DVD. Rather than aiming to try the DVD out for twenty minutes here and there after you've tidied up, or after you've watched a bit of ‘normal’ telly, assign yourself a set schedule for following its exercise routine. If the DVD is arranged in the format of a progressive course, give yourself a set date by which to complete the course. This will improve efficiency of your work out program.
