There is now a strong body of scientific research which supports the notion that positive emotions contribute to enhanced physical and emotional well-being. Similar to the nutrients from healthy foods promoting physical health, positive emotions can effectively be used as nutrition for the body and soul.

The beauty of positive emotions is that we don't have to wait for them to happen or develop, we can intentionally cultivate them using the wide variety of tools at our disposal. Consciously practising gratitude, kindness, mindfulness, meditation and optimism can all assist in the creation of positive emotions such as love, joy, contentment, hope and compassion. Try practising the loving kindness meditation (LKM) every day for a week and observe the effects in your life and on your well-being.

Positive emotions help us to build personal resources which assist us in coping with life's challenges, building resilience, cultivating healthy relationships, increasing life satisfaction, and ultimately creating optimal health and well-being. They can also serve as a buffer against negative emotions, and help move us beyond negative and neutral states to more consistent positive states of being.

With the ever-accumulating evidence supporting the self-generation of positive emotions for health and wellness, it is well worth spending some time and energy learning the art of intentionally cultivating positive emotions. You can start with the loving kindness meditation, and with all the previous happiness tips which are designed to generate positive emotions.
