If your past acne outbreaks have left blemish marks behind, there's no need to visit a dermatologist for expensive prescriptions.

Keeping your complexion blemish free doesn't mean you must use loads of harsh chemical products.

You also don't have to worry about the harshness you find in most over the counter acne blemish medications - you can get rid of your acne blemishes with common household items. Home remedies are inexpensive, won't cause side effects, and they work.

Acne blemishes are caused by your own body. When you have an acne outbreak your body rushes to battle that outbreak. When that outbreak is near the surface of your skin your body produces excess melanin. Melanin is what gives your skin it's color and the excess melanin is what causes the blemish.

The clinical term for this type of blemish is Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH for short. PIH will eventually go away on it's own but it could hang around for as long as two years.

Luckily, you can get rid of acne blemishes in a week or so with simple things you'll find at home.

A simple home remedy using lemon and cucumber is great if you have oily skin, or lemon and honey if you have dry skin. The acid in the lemon will slough off dead and old skin to reveal newer and brighter skin underneath. It also flushes out pores and keeps your skin feeling fresh and bright.

Cucumber juice is often recommended as a source of silica to improve the complexion and health of the skin. Honey has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. This is the reason honey doesn't spoil. Bacteria just can't grow in it.

Before you apply whichever remedy that's right for you, wash your face with a gentle liquid cleanser with no scrubbing agents. Use only your bare hands to wash, and wash for ten seconds or less. This simply prepares your skin for medication, nothing more. Pat your skin dry. Do not rub dry. Rubbing your skin can be irritating.

Home remedy for oily skin
Crush a cucumber slightly, and then squeeze out the juice with your hands, into a small bowl. Add a few drops of fresh lemon juice.

Apply the cucumber and lemon juice mixture to the blemished area. Wash it off with plain water after fifteen minutes. Use this blemish treatment at least once everyday and twice if you have the time.

Home remedy for dry skin
Mix half a tablespoon of honey with a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Apply this mixture to the blemish and leave it on for at 15 minutes and then rinse it off with water.

These two lemon juice remedies will work for most people in ridding acne scars caused by PIH. Be sure to give this treatment time to get rid of acne blemishes, don't be too impatient. You should start seeing results in a week or so if you only have light blemishes. Darker blemishes will take longer.

Deeper acne scars where scar tissue is involved, might be far harder to remedy, but try and give this option plenty of time to work and you're likely to see positive results within a few weeks.
