You know how it goes... You meet up with friends to celebrate the end of a long work week, or you spend time with the family celebrating the latest birthday or anniversary, and it happens. You have one too many lunches, one too many desserts, and one too many drinks! You're entitled to have some fun, but all of that over-indulging translates into anything but fun when you step onto the scale.
If you're like most people, you try to start losing weight or exercising when something happens - like when the New Year rolls around or when you're gearing up for your big high school reunion. But, unfortunately, losing weight becomes even harder if you're trying to do it without a proper weight loss program.
Most people start trying to achieve their weight loss goals blindly by making general statements like, 'I'm going to eat healthier,' or 'I'm going to exercise more.' They don't have a specific plan of action to make their dreams a reality, so after a few weeks of being 'healthier' and doing 'more', they don't see any results. That's when they quit altogether.
You need to think of your weight loss plan like running a business. Businesses set out daily, weekly, and monthly tasks that need to be done. They also have performance reviews and evaluations to see if they're actually making any progress towards their goals. A good weight loss program needs to work the same way. You need to start by having specific meal and exercise plans. Then, you need to have a list of things that can keep you motivated. You also need a specific way to measure your results. And speaking of results, you need to analyse your progress on a weekly basis.
A good weight loss program doesn't talk in generalities. Instead, it uses specific numbers. For example, it may put you on a 2,000 calorie per day diet, and tell you to do 4 weekly weight and cardio sessions so that you lose 1-2 kg of weight and 2-3% of your body fat in a month. You may also have to do monthly reports to see if you're making progress.
While that may seem extreme, it will generate a much bigger psychological boost, and when it comes to losing weight, your emotional health is just as important as your physical health. Instead of just trying to 'eat healthier' and 'exercise more', you can have specific goals to meet every single day. That way, when you accomplish them, you'll feel good about yourself. And, the better you feel about yourself, the more inclined you'll be to keep going!
As powerful as this can be, you may not be able to do it all by yourself.
If you are significantly overweight or you really struggle to lose weight, you may need to tap into the expertise of a personal trainer. A good one will have experience working with people in your situation, and he'll know exactly how to push through your mental barriers so that you lose more weight. In fact, a good trainer may offer just the push you need to get the body you've always wanted!
