Instant refreshers to get you through the day

Most of us lead pretty busy lives and don’t always have the time or energy to stop, refresh and resume. We just plough on and find ourselves tired and depleted by the end of the day. Caffeine or fizzy drinks may give us a temporary boost but the effects quickly wear off and leave us feeling even more jaded. If you must have caffeine, a cup of tea is more refreshing and beneficial in the long run.

With a little forethought and preparation there are a few things we can do to perk ourselves up and alleviate the afternoon slump.

Food-Wise: The best pick-me-up when we’re feeling a bit sluggish is a piece of fruit, and the most convenient ones are the grab-and-go varieties. Top of my list is an apple. They’re inexpensive, easy to carry around with you, and have a multitude of health benefits. Apples are also great to refresh your mouth if there’s no toothbrush handy. Bananas, sultanas, stone-fruits and nuts are also easy and convenient pick-me-ups.

Face-Wise: I keep a little kit in my handbag that contains refreshing eye drops, moisturiser, lip balm, eye-pencil and lip-pencil. They take up very little room and are handy for touch-ups between appointments.

Body-wise: In the glovebox of my car I keep a pack of wet-wipes, a comb, a pocket-sized hairspray, a natural deodorant spray and a refreshing spritzer. These are life-savers when I’m feeling less-than-fresh, especially in the summer. Spritzing my body and spraying deodorant under my arms works wonders.

Brain-wise: If your concentration is flagging a little and you’re worried that you won’t make it through the task at hand, take a few minutes to do one or all of the following: Open a window and breathe some fresh air, step outside and stretch your limbs, take a long drink of water, eat a banana (potassium is good for concentration), or switch to a different task for a few minutes. All of these things help to jog your brain awake so that you can return to your task refreshed.
