Packed with antioxidants, essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals, raw honey has been widely used for centuries for its multiple therapeutic properties and is now recognised by medical professionals as an effective alternative for numerous treatments. Here are some of the benefits of using honey daily:

Naturally suppresses cough

Honey's thick consistency coats the lining of the throat and suppresses cough; I use this recipe regularly to treat the nasty coughs of my kids, especially during the winter days.

Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with a few drops of lemon juice and drink on empty stomach, before breakfast. Or make a hot tea with lemon and honey.

Soothes burns and heals wounds

Its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties help to soothe down burns and heal wounds.

Apply a thin film of raw honey on minor burns and wounds.

Burns calories

Some studies have shown that fructose from honey readily burns fat during sleep.

Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of hot water and drink on empty stomach when you wake up and before going to bed.

Soothes heartburn and indigestion

By lining the throat and the esophagus, honey soothes indigestion and heartburn and prevents acid reflux.

Drink a cup of green tea with 1 tablespoon of honey and few drops of lemon juice for indigestion. For acidity and heartburn, take 1 tablespoon of honey only.

Sleep aid

Honey releases melatonin into the brain, which helps falling into a deep sleep.

Mix 1 tablespoon of honey in a cup of warm milk and drink before going to bed.

Treats eye infections

As unbelievable as it might be, raw honey can treat numerous infections of the eyes - namely, redness and itching of the eyes, trachoma, conjunctivitis and other similar diseases. It is also a better natural eye cure for dry eyes than artificial tears.

Mix equal parts of raw honey and distilled water to make a solution. Squeeze 2-3 drops in your eyes twice daily until infection clears.

Boosts immunity

Taking one or two tablespoons of raw organic honey every morning will protect your health by boosting your immune system, thanks to honey's phytonutrient content.

Honey for skin care

Honey has proved to be a wonderful natural skin care product that can be applied without fear of side effects.

For glowing skin:
Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 teaspoon of olive oil and the yolk of an egg.
Apply and leave for 15-20 minutes.
Wash off with warm water.

As an exfoliant
Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with a few drops of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon sugar.
Apply and gently scrub and massage skin.
Wash off with warm water.

Acne
Apply raw honey on acne and leave for 15-20 minutes before washing off.

Hair mask:

Heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil with 2 tablespoons of honey.
Add a few drops of lemon juice and apply on hair when still warm.
Leave for 30 minutes and wash off.

To enjoy the benefits fully, it is better to use raw and organic honey (it should not be consumed by infants under one year of age).
