Keep this in mind when you're next road tripping around the great Australian outback!

When we are seated for prolonged periods of time, certain parts of our body (the hip flexors and shoulder rotators for example) become tight and shorten, and at the same time, pull and lengthen the opposite side.

To avoid cramping, back pain and other long term health risks, build in regular breaks for walking and stretching into your car journeys, and keep an eye on your energy levels. Never drive - especially on country roads - if you are feeling tired or distracted.

Aim to stop every half hour or hour to have a breather, move your body and focus your mind.

You can also try to keep some movement in the body while you are driving, or when stopping frequently isn't an option. For instance, try pumping your ankles or rolling your shoulders for a few seconds each, and alleviate any strain or stress there.

Equally, take a minute or two to breath deeply and mindfully, cleansing any thoughts, worries or concerns that plague your mind. We tend to neglect our mind's health, but it can be detrimental to overlook when driving distances.
