Head lice is a common struggle among school-going children. Besides making the scalp itchy, it is also irritating and spreads easily to other members of the family and school mates.

That is why it is important to treat them quickly and effectively. By experience, I can say that lotion and shampoos do not work well in the long term.

Here is one easy way to combat them without using chemical parasiticides that may damage the hair and have nasty side effects.

White vinegar and olive oil

Mix 1/2 cup of olive oil with 1/2 cup of white vinegar and apply on the hair, strand by strand. Work it well through the hair and close to the scalp.

After a few hours, use a lice comb to remove the lice and their eggs and nits.

Wash off your hair with your regular shampoo.

Renew this operation after seven days to ensure all head lice and lice eggs have been removed.

Both olive oil and vinegar are good hair conditioners and besides removing the head lice, they will leave the hair soft and shiny.

Precautions to take to avoid re-contamination

Wash out pillow cases, bed sheets, hair bands, towels and other personal belongings that have been in contact with the hair, separately, in warm water.

Keep hair tied neatly to prevent loose lice getting hold of.

If you have kids sleeping in the same bed, ask them to sleep with their heads at opposite ends.

Regularly, use a lice comb to keep the lice in check.
