What you may not know about your bananas

Wonderfully sweet with firm and creamy flesh, bananas come prepackaged in their own thick and sturdy yellow jackets.

The beautiful thing about bananas is they are available for harvest all year round!

Perhaps even more beautiful are the health benefits of bananas.

Bananas are great because they do the following for our health:

1. May help against cardiovascular disease
Bananas are one of our best sources of potassium, an essential mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Since the average banana contains a whopping 400mg of potassium, a banana a day may help to prevent high blood pressure and protect against atherosclerosis. Source

2. May help stomach ulcers
The nutrients in bananas are extremely soothing to our gut lining. Source

3. Help with bowel issues.
A bout of diarrhea can quickly deplete your body of important electrolytes. Bananas can replenish your stores of potassium, one of the most important electrolytes. Plus, the fiber in a single banana can help ease constipation. However, too much of a good thing can...cause constipation, especially in babies so be careful in eating too many bananas.

4. Can promote kidney health
Research published in the International Journal of Cancer suggests that regular, moderated consumption of whole fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, can be protective. The results of this large population based prospective study (13.4 years) of 61,000 women aged 40-76, show that women eating more than 75 servings of fruits and vegetables per month (which translates into 2.5 per day) cut their risk of kidney cancer 40%. Among the fruits, bananas were especially protective. Go, bananas!

5. Can make you happy!
We've all heard the expression "Going bananas." Though it may mean something like "to lose your mind"...it should mean "to become insanely happy." Why? Because bananas are delicious, sweet, and a perfect snack. That combination makes me happy!

Bananas should be firm, but not too hard, bright in appearance, and free from bruises or other injuries.
They should be left to ripen at room temperature and should not be subjected to overly hot or cold temperatures.
For the most antioxidants, eat fully ripened fruit. Source


1. By itself as a snack, of course!
2. Baked goods
When fully ripened, you can substitute 2 ripened bananas in your favorite baked good. You can keep brown (fully ripened) bananas in your freezer for several months. Just pull 2 bananas out, thaw, and substitute for sugar.
