When planning to have a child, Ayurveda (traditional and holistic medicine of India) sees this as a very special time for a woman. It is an important time of preparing the body and mind for the potential new life which is going to be created. They believe that 3-6 months prior to conception, the woman should make diet and lifestyle changes that not only detox the body, but nourish it in preparation. Its aim is to bring the woman back to perfect health and balance.

What to expect
When seeing an Ayurvedic lifestyle consultant with the intention of preparing your body for pregnancy, firstly you will have an initial consultation. This will most likely involve a series of questions about yourself, pulse diagnosis, and examination of the tongue and eyes. They will determine your Dosha type. They will then give you diet and lifestyle advice including health regimes, herbs, self-massage, recipes etc which will be individual to you. They will also include information on what you should be avoiding doing and eating at this time. They will then either give you a copy or e-mail the information to you so that you can remember this and start to implement it into your life. The results you receive from Ayurveda depends on the consistency that you implement the practices into your life.

Some common Ayurvedic health regimes for pre-conception:
Ayurveda believes that for the reproductive system to be healthy, so does the rest of the body, with a big emphasis on the digestive system. Some common health regimes that one may be prescribed after seeing an Ayurvedic practioner may include some of the following:

Deep Breathing
Yoga and meditation
Nasya-Nasal Therapy
Drinks that detoxify and nourish the body
Specific herbs
Self-massage (Abhyanga)
Specific foods

The Ayurvedic doctor or consultant will usually then want to see you each month for follow-up consultations and maybe some massage treatments. After conception, they will start to prescribe different herbs, diet and lifestyle changes according to your symptoms and time of pregnancy. This will continue throughout the pregnancy until after the birth.
