A hot chocolate really hits the spot to warm your insides on a cold, wet and wintery day, with the added deliciousness of it being .. well, chocolatey!
Healthier Hot Chocolate
It is easy and convenient to reach for a pre-packaged hot chocolate sachet to mix in milk for a sweet hot drink, but what you will find in that sachet is a lot more than cocoa. Typically, a sachet of hot chocolate will contain around 20-30% cocoa and the rest of its contents will be made up of vegetable fats, glucose syrup, salt, sweeteners, milk powders and additives.
It is incredibly simple to make your own hot chocolate, without the need to reach for a pre-made mix; cocoa powder, sugar, milk and you're done. Alternatively, you could simply melt a piece of chocolate into a mug of hot milk.
For a far healthier hot chocolate, here is a simple recipe you can try out at home, adjusting to your own taste:
Heat the above in a saucepan over a medium-to-low heat until simmering, take off the heat and pour into your mug of choice.
If you decide you need more sweetness, you could add more coconut sugar or honey. Add a dash of cinnamon if you wish, too.
As well as hitting the hot chocolate spot, you have control over what goes into your drink (and what you leave out).
