I am not a gym junkie. A few months ago I had never set foot in a gym.
Exercise is not something that came naturally to me and whenever exercise did come my way, it was not going to be in a public place for all the world to see.
This year that changed.
I kept seeing that silly little number on the scales increasing
and any attempt I made to change my eating habits didn’t last long.
It wasn’t just the number on the scales though, it was the lack of energy that seemed to be forever hanging over me.
So one night, in an act of desperation, I contacted my local gym.
The next day I found myself lacing my favourite sneakers up, walking through the doors of the gym and signing up.
Who WAS I?
The staff member who met me was female and simply stunning.
I brushed off my mental comparison between how she looked and how I looked and introduced myself.
“Hi, I’m a frumpy mum with no energy and I need help.”
This sweet sweet girl was so freaking down to earth and made me feel comfortable straight away.
She sorted out the paperwork side of the things and before I knew it I was taken on a tour of the gym and started learning how all of the machines and equipment worked.
It was that easy.
Well, it wasn’t always that easy. I mean, I had to keep walking through those doors and actually do the exercise, but, every time I walked through those doors, I never felt like I shouldn’t be there.
In fact, there was this part inside of me that changed
. Not just my weight or my energy levels, but there was this little mini-me cheerleader surfacing inside of me. I was proud of myself.
I had stepped out of my comfort zone and done something new. I had challenged myself and it felt good.
It seems silly that practicing healthy habits and doing the thing that your body, mind and soul most need, can be such a hard mountain to start climbing
If you are unsure about joining a gym, I would really encourage you to give it a try.
Whatever your ‘healthy mountain’ is, I want to encourage you to do it. Whether it is walking through the doors of a gym for the first time, going out for a walk every day, or whether it is learning to slow down from being on the go all the time.
Start climbing your mountain.
It does get easier and your mini-me cheerleader will be there to give you a high-five.
