Maca, a turnip-like root grown high in the mountains of South America, is another recent player on the superfood scene.

The root is a rich source of calcium (more than milk), has over 20 amino acids, and considered to be an 'adaptogen' - a substance that helps our bodies deal with stress or illnesses. Historically it has been used as a natural aphrodisiac and fertility booster.

Maca is typically sold in powder form, and starting with a dose of 1 teaspoon daily is recommended. Try adding it to smoothies or porridge bowls to enjoy its subtle sweet, nutty flavour.
