Bananas are cultivated all year round and are picked off while still green. They are then left to ripen by themselves or have induced ripening, using Ethylene gas.
While induced ripened bananas have a longer shelf life, bananas left to ripen at room temperatures are tastier and sweeter.
So, how will you choose the perfect one?
Buy organic! And if that isn't possible, remember that bananas which have a perfect skin are those which have had chemically-induced ripening, while those which have been left to ripen at room temperature may not look so perfect, and may have cracked skin, but are better tasting and better for you.
