What is stress?

Stress is an adverse reaction to too much (and sometimes too little) pressure. Pressure can arise from yourself, work or home. It may even be a combination of all three.

There are four categories of signs which you should look out for: psychological, emotional, physical and vehavioral.

The first of the two signs are easily ignored. Psychological signs include the inability to make decisions, becoming distracted easily, worrying, having negative thoughts and memory lapses. Emotional signs include feeling out of control, having a lack of motivation, anger, frustration, being irritable, defensive and extra sensitive to criticism. It is important not to rationalise these symptoms and instead to notice them and take action towards stress management.

Further symptoms of stress are physical. These are the types of symptoms you are likely to mention to friends but not associate with stress. These are aches/pains, muscle tension or teeth grinding, frequent colds or infections, rashes, allergies, constipation or diarrhea, changes to weight, digestive problems, dizziness, panic attacks, physical tiredness or nausea.

Behavioral signs of stress are those which may be noticed by those closest to you. You may become socially withdrawn, be prone to accidents or forgetting things, become a workaholic, have an increased reliance on alcohol, caffeine or recreations drugs, have poor time management, became negative, reckless, nervous or aggressive.

It is absolutely essential to recognise these signs and to tackle stress as early as possible by either making changes to your lifestyle or seeking help.
