It's a big problem in the garden. They feed on most vegetable and fruit plants, on flowers and in particular they seem to love my roses. As soon as a new bud arrives those pesky little aphids are onto it!
Aphids are tiny little insects that are mostly green but they can be a yellowish and a brown grey colour. They suck the life out of your plants and cause leaves to become distorted. They can also cause flowers and leaves to drop off the plant and aphids excrete a sticky mixture which can turn into mould and look ugly. Aphids are a nasty little critter and can also spread viruses onto your plants.
Aphids breed like rabbits so you need to make sure when you spray them that you turn the leaf over and spray every tiny spot that may be an aphid.
This is the simplest and most effective recipe I have found. It was handed down to me by my dad. The best thing about it is that you are most likely to have all of these ingredients in your cupboard.
Just add two tablespoons of any dishwashing liquid and 1/4 cup methylated spirits to three cups of water. He recently told me you probably don't even need the metho but I've always used it.
Once mixed you can spray them straight away. Make sure you turn the leaves over . I also check a day later and then again a week later to find all the escapees that got away. The kids love doing this job for me.
This is a cheap, easy and quick recipe to rid your garden of these annoying little creatures. The aphids I mean.
