Every spring in my mother's house it was tradition to clean out all the dust and dirt, spruce things up, and get rid of anything that wasn't needed anymore. They would paint the whole house every two years. In between they would wash all the walls, floors, windows, doors and everything shined. It was fresh and clean, the smell of cleaner everywhere.
The one thing my parents never did was take stock internally. They needed to spring clean their insides to get rid of things that hurt them and caused resentments.
My parents turned into alcoholics and buried themselves in bottles, never looking past. They didn't take the time to see what this was doing to their children. They eventually succumbed to the dirt, scarring and hurts that they held in so tightly, never acknowledging that there were problems.
Even trees drop what they don't need anymore!
Alcoholics don't have the ability to see what is going on around them. All they can do is bury everything. The pain is too great and it only gets worse for them as time passes.
Everyone else is then left in their dust, to try to pick up their own pieces.
