Turmeric is not your average spice, it originates from Southeast India and is from the ginger family. Countries like India have known of the benefits of turmeric for centuries; beneficial health properties, like warding off dementia, and reducing the risk of cancer and strokes.

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin which has positive effects on cholesterol and prevents the build up of 'bad cholesterol' in blood vessels. It also helps digestion, it may even help weight control by reducing gas and bloating.

Turmeric is also a natural anti inflammatory, and may help fight colds and flus, and bacterial and viral infections.

Turmeric comes in a powder form at your local supermarket. The powder is ground roots and bulbs of the plant. There are also turmeric supplements you can take, or grate the fresh plant yourself.

This antioxidant rich spice has been called a super food and studies are being conducted on its anti-aging properties.

Adding turmeric to your diet is simple and easy, sprinkle some turmeric on your next meal!
