Travelling is one of life's greatest gifts: getting to explore new lands, meet people of different cultures, experience things you've never before, and of course, tuck in to some local delicacies.

For vegetarians, vegans, or those with an intolerance and/or allergy however, this can sometimes be challenging and frustrating.

Here we have listed our top tips - applicable to whatever your needs are. Holiday 'hangry' free!

1) Know the lingo.
It can be invaluable to know how to say "I am vegan"/"I don't eat fish" /"No cheese please" etc. in the native language. Most guidebooks have these basic words translated, but if not, search online or find someone you trust and get them to write it down for you.

Veggoagogo is also a good way to go to overcome the language barrier and avoid confusion.

Obviously the above does not apply if you speak the same tongue!

2) Do some research.
The city/country/planet you are visiting may already cater for vegans/intolerances well, so it is worth your while to look at sites such as happycow.net and tripadvisor.com to see what is around.

Likewise, the city/country/planet of your choice may already have local dishes that are naturally vegan/intolerance friendly, so enjoy giving these a go!

3) Map the nearest supply stores.
It's super handy to have a note of the closest supermarkets, markets, and (if available) vegan or health food stores to your accommodation.

You'll know exactly where to go if you get desperate!

4) Pack some ammo!
Before I head out for a day of adventures and mischief, I make sure I have some snacks packed in case no other options avail themselves. Nuts, dried fruit, fresh fruit, veggie sticks, wraps, sandwiches etc. are all great ideas.

5) Supplement if needed.
While traveling, you can't always guarantee you will consume your recommended daily intake of essential nutrients (be that protein, vitamins, calcium, iron etc.) so it may pay to pack some supplements before leaving home.

Getting sick or becoming unwell on holiday isn't fun, so I'd suggest it's better to be safe than sorry!
