Chocolate chai tea recipe
There is nothing better than a hot and spicy chai tea on a cold morning to warm you from the inside out and get your motor running! There are a few tasty chai blends on the market, but in the long run it is more cost effective to make your own, and you can tailor it to your specific tastes. I add a piece of dark chocolate to the mix for a little extra dazzle.
You can stock up on the ingredients from your local Indian grocer, where they can be purchased in bulk and at a much cheaper rate than at Coles or Woolworths.
Chai for one (adjust as necessary for more)
Ingredients^
1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
2 black cardamon pods
1 green cardamon pod
2 whole cloves
1 cinnamon quill
Pinch of nutmeg
12 whole black peppercorns
1 black teabag
1 piece of dark chocolate
Honey to sweeten to your taste
1/4 cup of milk of your choice
^If you don't have the ingredients in their whole form you can replace with powdered versions. And if you're vegan replace the honey with sugar.
Method
Add the ginger to 2 cups of water in a saucepan on a low heat and simmer for a few minutes.
Roughly chop your chocolate and add to the bottom of your cup in preparation.
Roughly chopped chocolate
Add the remaining spices to the saucepan and simmer gently for ten minutes.
Simmering spices
Add the teabag and allow it to steep for a couple of minutes.
If you have an espresso machine or milk frother, heat your milk. If not, add the milk to saucepan and heat.
Strain the mix through a tea strainer into your cup, stir through with the chocolate then stir in some honey and serve.
Enjoy a delightful homemade chocolate chai tea today, and share with your loved ones.
