Hot mulled apple juice

If you are looking for a warm pick me up when the evenings turn chilly, why not try making some hot mulled apple juice this winter. It contains infused spices which makes this a perfect and delicious non alcoholic substitute for mulled wine. It is also a favorite among the kids in my house and I make it every year for winter solstice.

Serve in a glass with a cinnamon stick


Ingredients:

  • 1 litre of apple juice
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 4 pimento allspice
  • 2 juniper berries
  • A few strips of orange or lemon peel (optional)

  • You will need these ingredients


    Method

    1. Measure out 1 litre of the juice and pour it into the rice cooker, then add the spices and put on the lid.

    Pour the juice into the rice cooker


    2. I prefer making mine in a rice cooker as it will boil away happily until you turn it off. If you are using this method, turn on the rice cooker and set it to the 'cook' setting. Let it boil for an hour or so, you will know it's ready when the aromatic spices fill the house with a delightful smell.

    3. If you are using a saucepan, place the ingredients in a pot, bring it to the boil then simmer for an hour.

    When this is done, turn off the rice cooker or stove top and let it cool for a few minutes. This allows the spices to sink to the bottom and makes it easier to serve.

    Delicious hot apple juice, perfect for a cold winters day, or night


    Use a ladle to scoop up the hot liquid into a glass mug. Inhale the delightful fragrance and enjoy!
