My health and fitness journey begins Jetts 8 Week Challenge week 1

Okay, so I’m about to turn 50, am dreadfully overweight and eating all the wrong foods. My joints are creaking and groaning under the pressure they have to endure, and to put it mildly, I need help!

I’ve been going to the gym … occasionally. I’ve been dieting …until mid-afternoon each day when I absolutely must have chocolate … or bread … or chippies …

It was time to have a chat with the team at my gym, Jetts (Camp Hill), and work with a personal trainer. That’s when Alofa came into my life! I was on my way to a new me, fitter, leaner, stronger.

After a few initial sessions it was time to step up to the plate and really commit. Like a miracle the Jetts 8 Week Challenge was being advertised, and after a day or two of soul-searching I joined up.

Included in the challenge package are four 30-minute PT sessions, group classes, nutritional guidance, a weekly weigh-in, and optional before and after photos.

I’ve just started my second week and I’m still - amazingly - motivated to either work out at the gym, or go for 35-45 minute walks every day. I’ve even dragged my sorry-ass out of bed for BoxFit classes on Saturday mornings!

Probably the most enlightening aspect of working with a trainer was to discover I’ve been eating too little! The greatest change I’ve made to my lifestyle, in just one week, is taking the time to shop for, prepare, and enjoy healthy, nutritious and delicious meals. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I am far from the perfect challenge contender - Friday night saw me attack the chippies and chocolate - but rather than ‘give up’ I ‘fess up’, and receive the encouragement I need to get back on the good-food wagon.

My first weigh-in is coming up and I’ll be back to let you know how I’ve gone, what’s in store for me in weeks two and three, and a few tips for you! As a starter I implore you to get out there and walk, even if you’ve been slouching on the couch all day, get up now and take a brisk walk around the block. Then include an extra vegetable in your dinner, have a glass of water, and get a good night’s sleep!
