Anyone with dry, itchy, or flaky skin can relate to the extreme discomfort it causes. Whether you suffer in winter time or year-round, try using these natural remedies that can easily be found in your kitchen to relieve the itch.

Honey

Honey is an excellent natural moisturiser that is filled with antioxidants and skin-relieving properties. Just rub the infected area gently with fresh honey before washing it off with lukewarm water.

Afterwards, apply a natural based lotion that is free from alcohol and perfumes. I find that oatmeal based ones work best in locking in the moisture.

Personally, I always keep a jar of honey in the shower for its many skin-healing benefits. The magical ingredient also works wonders as a face wash. You can combine it with other ingredients or use it as is. It clears the complexion, nourishes the skin, and can heal dry patches or spots.

Milk

Although applying fresh milk on your skin may sound surprising, from my experience, it is one of the best remedies for dry skin. It acts as a natural moisturiser and helps in removing the dead dry skin. Just dip a cotton ball into some fresh milk and apply that to the affected area. Applying fresh milk works best after washing the skin with raw honey.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar helps in relieving itchy skin simply by applying it using a cotton ball on the affected area. If the itchiness is all over your body, add 2-3 cups of cider vinegar to a warm bath and soak in it for 15-30 minutes. Avoid having hot showers or baths as the additional heat strips your skin of its natural moisture.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains fatty acids that compensate for the amount lost in dry skin. It helps in locking in moisture, relieving itchiness, nourishing, and repairing damaged skin. You can apply this oil on the affected area or freely all over the body. For best results, aim to apply it straight after a warm shower or bath for it to be better absorbed. Alternatively, you can apply coconut oil before going to bed leaving it to do its magic overnight.

Yoghurt

Yoghurt is excellent in hydrating and rejuvenating the skin as it is filled with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also effective in soothing dry and itchy skin. To utilize its benefits, apply yoghurt on areas with dry skin by gently rubbing it on and leaving it for 10-15 minutes before washing it off. Doing this daily yields the best results.

Baths

Aside from soaking in an apple cider vinegar bath, the following also help in relieving dry skin:

  • Baking Soda Bath: Add 1 cup of baking soda to a warm bath and soak.
  • Oatmeal Bath: Add 2 cups of oatmeal to a warm bath and soak.

  • You can also add a few drops of skin-relieving essential oils to your baths such as lavender, basil, Bay leaf, chamomile, neem, peppermint, rosemary, or thyme. After the bath, ensure to pat or air-dry and avoid rubbing the areas with a towel.
